“Look! A Heart with Wings”

A Letter from Our Head of School

Dear WSP Families and Friends,

While visiting the Sunflower Kindergarten outside this morning, a child approached me to first show me some leaves she called “wings”. She then returned with a leaf in the shape of a heart. Her search continued and she returned once more with a bundle of leaves. She pinched them between her fingers with the heart shaped leaf in the middle and said, “Look! A heart with wings!”

“Yes, a heart with wings”, I thought. That is what Waldorf Education acknowledges and fosters in each child. We help children develop the capacities to give their heart’s desires wings. In all that we do, we are mindful of our mission to foster each child’s capacity to become an independent thinking, compassionate, courageous, and purposeful human being. I am especially proud that we include the word “courageous” in our mission statement.

Next week will be an exciting week! We will celebrate Michaelmas, the festival of harvest and a time to inspire courage within ourselves. Alongside Michaelmas, we celebrate our Annual Fund Kick-off. Our theme this year is “From Seed to Harvest”. While this is very appropriate for fall, we were inspired by this theme because of how Waldorf education nourishes and allows capacities to grow and develop within our students.

As this is our first newsletter of the 2021–22 school year, we attempted to offer a glimpse into every classroom. I know you will delight in seeing so many hearts at work growing their wings!

With best wishes for the fall,

Kirsten Christopherson-Clark

Head of School
