Kwanzaa Celebrations
On Wednesday, December 15, 2021, the auditorium was filled with joy and love as our early childhood students and grades students gathered for Kwanzaa celebrations to uplift and celebrate our Black and Brown students and families.
WSP parent, Sister IAsia Thomas, led the celebration and was joined by several teaching artists we hope to invite back to WSP in the future as part of the collaborative work initiated by WSP’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Committee.
During the celebration, students were introduced to the seven principles of Kwanzaa, learned greetings and sang songs in Kiswahili, played rhythms with shaker instruments, learned dances, shared ideas, and enjoyed captivating dance and drumming performances. Children are still talking about their experiences! At the end of each assembly, students presented the artists with handmade gifts of gratitude.
Thank you to Sister IAsia and Malcolm Thomas, Dancers: Ebony Castaphney and Chrisala Brown, and Drummers: Miguel Sague and Dante Mitchell.
