About the Event
On December 8th and 9th, our school will honor the tradition of the Winter Spiral. This in-school festival, celebrated during the Advent season, provides a quiet, contemplative experience for the peaceful, self-reflective side of the holidays.
For children, winter is often a time of anticipation. The first snowfall, visits with family and friends, special foods and gifts are some of the events to which children very much look forward. The Winter Spiral reflects this special time in a celebration of turning the darkness into light. We are reminded that even in the darkest of winter we can still find light to lead us on our way.
During this celebration, the classes enter a darkened room and walk along a spiral path to light their candles from one candle in the center. They then place their candles along the path, each one bringing more light to the room until it glows softly. Parents in Grades 1–8 are invited to witness this and more information will come from your teachers next week. This is a celebration of quiet confidence, of carrying light in darkness and of sharing that light with others.
A community spiral will be held on Friday, December 9th in the evening from 6:00–7:00pm for parents, children, and anyone in the community who wishes to walk the spiral. Please arrive by 5:45pm and be prepared to stay for the whole hour. Latecomers will not be admitted due to the disruption that this causes.
To help create a reverent space during this celebration, please bear in mind that this is a very quiet, peaceful event. Please do not take pictures, leave your phones in the car, and do not leave the auditorium until all participants have finished walking the spiral.
