Studying birds in the Fourth Grade

As a part of our Zoology block, the students in Grade Four have been particularly interested in the study of birds.  We have learned about our local Peregrine Falcon population and followed the breeding season of the two pairs of Peregrines who live in Pittsburgh.  We were visited by Maxine, a Red-Tailed Hawk from the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, to further our knowledge of raptors.  We dissected owl pellets from a Barn Owl to learn about the hunting and eating habits of raptors.  Through the majority of the block, we have been tending to an incubator with 18 chicken eggs.  This project has allowed us to explore the development of birds inside their eggs.  Our Zoology block full of avian explorations has been a very exciting time in Grade Four.
