Who is the school nurse?

Over the course of the school year, the children in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade will routinely visit with the school nurse and her team of specialists for their state-mandated height and weight, vision, hearing, dental and speech screenings. Opting out of the screenings is an option for all families, but they must complete the proper paperwork, including the Routine Screening Opt-Out Form along with providing records of these screenings by their private practitioners.

Our school nurse, Barb Murphy, visits the school on the third Friday of every month to perform these screenings, review student medical files to ensure they meet state requirements, and to prepare for visits from the dental hygienist and speech therapist. She will contact parents, in collaboration with the Administrative Team, to ensure all of the students are in good health, up-to-date on their immunizations, and meeting PA Stature. (For those families choosing not to immunize their children, parents must provide a signed statement explaining that belief.) Nurse Murphy is very familiar with our students and has been working with the Waldorf School of Pittsburgh for many years.

Visit the school calendar throughout the school year to see when the school nurse will be visiting, and check the blog regularly for updates on which screenings are taking place.
