School Closings and Delay Policy

During extreme weather conditions and power outages, the school might be closed or delayed.  If the school decides to close or delay the start of school, we will announce this decision through local media outlets and we will contact parents directly through the Campus Wire service.

The school will announce school closings or delays through the following:

  • Local TV, radio stations and websites: WPXI, KDKA or WTAE
  • A message on the school’s website (www.waldorfpittsburgh.org)
  • A message from the Campus Wire service

The school would like to recommend that every parent sign up to receive e-mail alerts of school closings and delays from WPXI.  Please go to www.wpxi.com, select “closings” under the weather tab, and sign up for the e-mail alerts to be sent directly to the parent’s email address from WPXI.

Please remember that the Waldorf School of Pittsburgh determines cancellations and delays separately from the Pittsburgh Public Schools.  However, your child’s bus schedule will follow Pittsburgh Public School cancellations and delays. If school is delayed, please note that we are not prepared to receive your child before 10 am (except for Little Friends students.)

Nursery and Kindergarten: In the event of a two-hour delay, the Nursery and Kindergarten will begin at 10:15 am.  Please give your children a snack or late breakfast before they come to school after a two-hour delay.  The lunch and afternoon schedule will remain the same for those children staying in the Extended Care Program.

Grades Programs: In the event of a two-hour delay, the Grades will begin at 10:15 am.  Please give your children a snack or late breakfast before they come to school after the two-hour delay.  The normal lunch and afternoon schedule will be maintained.

Morning Garden: In the event of a two-hour delay, Morning Garden classes will begin at 10 am and will meet inside.  If school is closed, Morning Garden is not in session.
Little Friends: In the event of a two-hour delay for school programs, Little Friends will not observe the two-hour delay and will still start at 8 am.  Little Friends parents should disregard the “School is delayed” signs on the doors of the school building.   If the school is closed then Little Friends is closed.

The school would like to ask that during the winter months especially that parents remain observant of the weather conditions and check the road conditions every morning before proceeding to school.  In the past, the school has closed or been delayed due to inclement weather including: snow or ice accumulation, cold or frigid weather, and windy conditions.
