In the Third Grade

Grade 3 is currently in the midst of a measurement block where we are learning to measure liquid, dry goods, and the weight of anything and everything! Gallons, quarts, pints, bushels, pecks, tons, pounds, you name it! The 3rd grade has been busily measuring it. With this work, we have also been busy converting muffin recipes so we can make 5 batches at a time each week for our weekly muffin sale (while also reinforcing the multiplication tables). The proceeds of the muffin sales will go toward the annual 3rd grade farm trip later in the spring. During the coming weeks, we will explore multi-digit multiplication and continue the work of memorizing the times tables in random order! In the meantime, stories of Moses and the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt have rounded out or days, while offering a connection to our recent annual Grades celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s birthday. While singing the African American spiritual, “Go Down, Moses,” the last few weeks, the class found a strong connection between what happened thousands of years ago to what occurred in more recent history.
