In the Second Grade

Second grade is immersed in an arithmetic block, where we are expanding on our work with the times tables, delving into the twelve times table for the first time and creating calendars of our own. We have discovered that the number twelve is indeed a very special number, for it is found in many places: the months of the year, the hours on a clock, the amount in a dozen, and even the number of second graders in our class! With the verse included below, we have experienced that the number twelve is unique and special in that it can be regrouped in many ways. Over the next few weeks, we will also take a look at an analog clock, learn to tell time, and let the clock take us on many number journeys where we can practice our growing math skills.

Twelve children together are we

Merry and bright as you can see,

Twelve children hand in hand

In one circle here we stand.

Each with a partner, hand in hand

Six pairs now before us stand.

TWELVE IS SIX LOTS OF TWO.

Into two rings now we run

Six in each ring, quickly done.

TWELVE IS TWO LOTS OF SIX.

Into four rings now we run

Three in each ring, quickly done.

TWELVE IS FOUR LOTS OF THREE.

Wait and we will show you more.

Three rings now, in each is four.

TWELVE IS THREE LOTS OF FOUR.

Twelve children together are we

Merry and bright as you can see,

Twelve children hand in hand

In one circle here we stand.
