The Fifth Grade returned from the December break ready to work…and that’s just what we’ve been doing. We’ve studied the ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt before moving on to the History of Numbers. In our History of Numbers block, the students were introduced to many different cultures’ number systems, and found that not everyone’s used base 10, nor were they as “easy” as ours to use. Working to understand Mesopotamian cuneiform numerals, which are in base 60, or Mayan numerals which are base 20, we found ourselves grateful for the ten digits we manipulate to make all numbers. Currently the Fifth Grade is in the beginnings of Greek history and mythology, studying the Trojan War, Greek geography, and starting to work on our class play which will be Orpheus and Eurydice (to be performed on April 8th at 5:00 pm.)
The Waldorf School of Pittsburgh will have a 2-hour delay on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Little Friends will also have a 2-hour delay.
The Open House originally scheduled for Jan. 13 was postponed due to weather. The new date is Jan. 20.
