Our School and Our Region

Currently serving approximately 140 students spanning ages eighteen months through sixth grade, the Waldorf School of Pittsburgh has offered Waldorf Education to the area since 1993. We currently hold Full Membership status from the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America (WECAN) and Developing School status from the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America (AWSNA). Since 2003, we have been located in a historic 140 year old Victorian mansion on a two and a half acre campus in Pittsburgh’s Bloomfield neighborhood. The rest of the neighborhood is primarily residential with several vibrant business districts within a few blocks and a burgeoning arts scene along the adjacent Penn Avenue corridor. If you are unfamiliar with the area, the City of Pittsburgh remains a hidden treasure and ranked number 2 in Forbes’ listing of most affordable cities. It has also been highly ranked as one of America’s most livable cities. It has a small town feel packaged with numerous colleges and universities, several corporate headquarters, a thriving arts and cultural community, and a number of large parks in and around the city. Within 30-45 minutes of the city are dozens of opportunities for hiking, biking, camping, and other outdoor activities.

Summer Grass Cutting Signup

Now that warmer weather is upon us, the school is soliciting volunteers to sign up for grass cutting.  As in the past few years, volunteers will sign up for a particular week during the summer months.  During that week, each volunteer will only cut an area that is most in need, which should only take an hour or two.  You are welcome to run the weed whacker as well if you are comfortable with the tool.  This approach makes the whole ground more manageable and saves any one person from having to cut the entire lot at one time.

To sign up for a week, please follow this link:

Early in the week you sign up, or shortly before, you will be contacted by the school’s Facilities Manager, Brendan Froeschl, to arrange a time to access the mower and to go over areas to cut.  Thanks for your help!

Business Office News and Upcoming Deadlines

Extended Care and Little Friends Invoices for May and June
ECSI invoices for Extended Care (contracted use only) and Little Friends will be sent out to parents on May 15th, and these will show a combined amount for charges for May and for June.  Rather than receiving separate invoices for these two months, families will receive just one invoice for the two months, with no paper invoice being sent out on April 15th due to a billing error.   Please contact Laura Baker if you have questions about your combined bill.

Enrollment contracts
Enrollment contracts for 2012-13 were due back at the school on Tuesday, April 24.  If contracts were not returned on this date, a late fee of $50 will be applied to your student’s account.  If you still have not returned this paperwork to the Business Office, please contact the school immediately, so that this essential paperwork can be completed.

Materials Fees
The invoices for Materials Fees for the 2012-13 school year will be sent out to families next week.  Payments are due to the Business Office on June 1.

Volunteer Service Hours
Parents should update the volunteer log book (in the Front Office) with their completed service hours.  Each Grades program family is required to complete at least 40 hours of service each year, and each Early Childhood program family in the Nursery and Kindergarten is required to complete at least 12 or 20 hours of service, depending on the length of their program.  The last day to complete service hours for the current school year is May 31.  On June 1, any outstanding, incomplete hours will be billed to each family at a rate of $20/hr.

There are many ways that parents could complete their service hours.   Please check the newsletter and website for details.

Build our school through fund through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program

Get your application in now for the 2012-2013 school year.

What is the EITC Program?

The EITC program is an easy way for businesses to reduce their state tax liability and at the same time to support non-profit schools through charitable donations. Businesses that donate to the Waldorf School through the EITC program can achieve tax savings up to a maximum of $300,000 per taxable year by earning “credits’ which will be applied as a deduction to their Pennsylvania state taxes. A business can choose two options:

  • A one-year tax credit equal to 75% of the contributed amount given to the school
  • A two-year tax credit equal to 90% of the contributed amount if the business agrees to provide the same amount of contribution for two consecutive years.

The Knighting Ceremony

After a year of community service, secret home improvement projects, the Medieval Games, interviewing and writing about a person worthy of admiration, and being observed by a Secret Sponsor who records knightly deeds, the Squires of Sixth Grade are ready to discover if they will be elevated to the Ranking of Knight.  This project, common in the sixth grade classes of many Waldorf Schools, challenges the students to be their best selves, help others, and find positive ways to contribute to the communities in which they live and learn as they enter into adolescence.  Please join us for this thoughtful rite of passage at 7:00 pm on May 24th in the Chapel.

The Second Grade Play

Last Friday, in the auditorium, the second grade class proudly presented their play: “Saint Jerome and the Lion.” Speaking in unison, but acting out individual parts, they beautifully presented the story of an injured lion who wanders into a Monastery seeking help. Most of the monks flee in fear. Only Jerome is able to recognize that this lion is gentle. He finds a thorn in the lion’s paw, removes it, and in gratitude the lion offers to help them. They give him the task of protecting their donkey, a task that he is well suited for. However, one hot day, he makes the mistake of falling asleep and the donkey is stolen away by some mischevious merchants. Returning the the Monastery alone, he is accused of eating the Lion. Wise Jerome doubts this to be the truth, and insists that they continue to be kind to him. As a consequence, the lion is assigned the task that once belonged to the donkey: hauling wood. Every evening, he wanders the desert looking for his long lost friend. After one year, the lion at last sees the donkey traveling with a caravan. He rescues the donkey, and brings him back to his rightful owners, with the camels following. The merchants, after recovering from their fright, later find themselves at the Monastery looking for their donkey and camels. Realizing their wrong, they beg for forgiveness. Jerome will not accept money as an apology, but turns it over to the lion. The lion, remarking on the kindness shown to him, gladly forgives the merchants. After sharing a feast, the performance is concluded with the following lines:

Through the desert of sorrow and strife,
Forgiveness flows like the water of life.
Blessed by the sunlight, shining above,
The desert blooms through the power of love.
